1996年，Harrell（贝司手）、Arnold(主唱)和Roberts(吉他手)这三个好朋友组建了这支乐队。因为当时成员有3个，所以3（trio）就成为了他们的名字的组成部分之一，同时他们在亚拉巴马州的一个建筑上看到了“Doors Down”这个让他们喜爱的短语，所以乐队就被最后命名为3 Doors Down。

2003年，乐队又推出了新专集《Away From The Sun》。这张专集无疑比《The Better Life》更进了一步，专集发行不到一周便登上了Billboard排名前200中的第8名！！并且在一个月之内就达到了黄金销量，而后又突破了白金销量。当然这都得归功于其中非常成功的单曲When I'm Gone。还有专集里著名单曲“Here Without You”也连续创入美国Billboard排行榜前40名13周之久。同年，乐队又推出了Away From The Sun巡演的现场的EP《Another 700 Miles》，其中包括六首前两张专集中的作品和一首新歌“It’s Not Me”。现在也以达到黄金销量，看来在销售出去这么多专集以后乐队魅力依然不减。
