9 j! h  I2 C& c7 l1 s/ _% E2002年8月2日，Mark Jansen被迫离开成功的荷兰金属乐队After Forever，这给他们的乐迷极大的震惊，并引起了许多讨论和愤慨。但是Mark Jansen自己却想尽快再次投入到工作之中。两个星期之后，他终于找到了他自己的乐队Sahara Dust。
经过两次的人员重组后，乐队于2002年11月正式成立。首先加入新乐队的成员是：吉他手Ad Sluijter，Mark的朋友和Cassiopeia的前任吉他手，也曾经和Coen Janssen协助After Forever完成过两场演出，过去他也曾和After Forever有些关系的（在他们第一任键盘手离开之后他曾参加他们在Effenaar, Eindhoven的特约演出）。很快贝司手Yves Huts也加入他们了。

1 a& E7 p! ~& a7 j, L  z所有的乐队成员都非常努力的作他们第一张demo的演出目录，同时也是他们第一场现场演出的曲目。这张demo是2002年11月23到24日在鹿特丹的Excess Studio录制的（曾经也录制了After Forever的处女专集"Prison Of Desire"）。乐队录制了两首歌"Illusive Consensus" 和 "Cry For The Moon"。其中一个有趣的细节是有一个5人的唱诗班为Sahara Dust伴唱。Sahara Dust的第一场演唱会是在荷兰的Tilburg为Anathema做特约嘉宾。场地013挤满了歌迷，当然歌迷也看到了气氛极其火暴的演出。"Cry For The Moon"这张demo计划于2003年1月初发行。这张demo不会官方发行，只是为了乐队的宣传和乐队未来演唱会的预约作铺垫。也就是说只有一部分他们的铁杆歌迷才能从乐队经纪人那买到这张demo了（大概100张左右）。
& a% q5 A0 T  Y7 l; _: ^. k' X2003年1月底，Sahara Dust开始录制他们的首张专集。这次乐队选择在德国录制这张专集，制作人是Sascha Paeth（制作过Rhapsody的许多专集），Luca Turili 和 Kamelot，虽然主唱Simone病了使得乐队有一小段时间停滞，不过这张专集仍是非常棒的，专集中的各首歌不能光用让人满意来概括，简直是太优秀了，而他们与制作人的合作也是相当愉快。用Mark的话来说就是：“我们经常意见统一。他确实将歌曲提高到一个更高的水平。
2003年3月乐队决定改名为Epica（Kamelot最近的一张专集名）。根据官方的说法，乐队成员想通过改新名字，出新专集得到一个新的开始，一次重生。
6月初Epica的首张专集"The Phantom Agony"正式登上商店货架。这张专集已经被许多金属杂志收录介绍了。Epica音乐中的一个重要组成部分是唱诗班的伴唱。与Mark的前乐队After Forever相比，Epica的唱诗班大概有以前的两倍大，在许多歌中这个6人的唱诗班扮演着最重要的角色。大部分的Epica成员还是电影音乐迷，特别是Hans Zimmer 和 Danny Elfman。这些影响在"The Phantom Agony"中都有体现，特别是专集的同名曲，更是优秀的电影音乐作品。

"The Phantom Agony"中的歌词（第二首是Simone的作品，第七首是Mark的作品）都是Mark最喜欢的话题，关于宗教和政治的（"Facade of Reality"《现实的正面》就是诉说2001年的9。11事件的，其中我们还能听到英国首相Tony Blair的几段讲话）。专集中也有几首关于个人感情的歌：Mark写的"Run For A Fall"，是关于他离开After Forever的事；还有就是Simone写的"Illusive Consensus"是关于爱情的。
* T& |9 s; u# P% n8 l0 ]$ D- n* ZEpica正忙着宣传他们的专集：接受采访，当然也有现场演唱会什么的。乐队签署了著名的预约代理商MOJOconcerts。也就是说乐队不久就会有更多的特约演出。离开After Forever之后的 Mark Jansen变的更加成熟了，同时，还要感谢所有帮助他作音乐的音乐家们在歌曲上的贡献。

他们有一个合唱团 ( 有两个男高音和4个女高音） 和一列管弦乐队（3个小提琴、两个中提琴、两个大提琴和一个直立式贝斯）.
Epica 乐队混合了哥特金属和交响金属 其他成分还有力量金属。 吉他手Ad Sluijter形容到乐队就像：“ 一座桥把哥特金属和力量连接起来” 主唱Simone Simons 表示：偏爱把它描述为 交响金属 。 而Mark Jansen 倒不是这么认为 他不介意别人把它称为 哥特金属 。

他们运用了许多交响金属和哥德金属乐队会使用的方式：一方面运用死腔，另一方面又用空灵优美的女声作为强烈对比。Eduardo Rivadavia 在 All Music Guide 网站上说：“Epica的吸引力来自于光与暗两种极端声音的对比；巨大的吉他 riff 与快速的鼓点造成的沉重压力，和层层管弦乐和键盘所堆栈的悦耳音乐互相对比。”Simone Simons 则用在次女高音音域的歌剧式唱腔演唱歌曲，但有时她也会演唱“毫无瑕疵、带有丰富情感的纯净女低音。”Mark Jansen 的死腔“虽然是用来衬托 Simons 的歌声，但是在于音乐平衡度和多样化上非常重要。”乐队也会聘请合唱团和交响乐队去增加音乐上的装饰，像是吟诵字句和演唱拉丁文或阿拉伯文的歌词。
