Epica是来自荷兰的一支女声交响金属乐队。由前After Forever的吉他手Mark Jansen所成立。气势恢弘的演奏、女声厚实的古典唱腔、庞大的唱诗班气势与力量并重的交响效果以及在古典唱腔中穿插的死腔仿佛有如天使与恶魔之间的对话都够成了一副副壮丽的景象，在深深的聆听的过程中，思绪万千。( V4 @& _ l1 D2 I$ Q0 j( J3 N% n

2002年8月2日，Mark Jansen被迫离开成功的荷兰金属乐队After Forever，这给他们的乐迷极大的震惊，并引起了许多讨论和愤慨。但是Mark Jansen自己却想尽快再次投入到工作之中。两个星期之后，他终于找到了他自己的乐队Sahara Dust。
8 z: w% z' f8 [5 n2 s0 l' e经过两次的人员重组后，乐队于2002年11月正式成立。首先加入新乐队的成员是：吉他手Ad Sluijter，Mark的朋友和Cassiopeia的前任吉他手，也曾经和Coen Janssen协助After Forever完成过两场演出，过去他也曾和After Forever有些关系的（在他们第一任键盘手离开之后他曾参加他们在Effenaar, Eindhoven的特约演出）。很快贝司手Yves Huts也加入他们了。% |( |; ^- Y4 y4 l& R) E# a! O
他们寻找好的女歌手（乐队音乐的重要部分）和鼓手花了很长时间，最后Sahara Dust雇佣了那时只有17岁的Simone Simons 和Jeroen Simons（别看他们是相同的姓，只不过凑巧而已，他们之间没什么亲戚关系）。Jeroen Simons也曾是Cassiopeia的成员。
4 d# N5 K, C/ S6 b1 l所有的乐队成员都非常努力的作他们第一张demo的演出目录，同时也是他们第一场现场演出的曲目。这张demo是2002年11月23到24日在鹿特丹的Excess Studio录制的（曾经也录制了After Forever的处女专集"Prison Of Desire"）。乐队录制了两首歌"Illusive Consensus" 和 "Cry For The Moon"。其中一个有趣的细节是有一个5人的唱诗班为Sahara Dust伴唱。Sahara Dust的第一场演唱会是在荷兰的Tilburg为Anathema做特约嘉宾。场地013挤满了歌迷，当然歌迷也看到了气氛极其火暴的演出。"Cry For The Moon"这张demo计划于2003年1月初发行。这张demo不会官方发行，只是为了乐队的宣传和乐队未来演唱会的预约作铺垫。也就是说只有一部分他们的铁杆歌迷才能从乐队经纪人那买到这张demo了（大概100张左右）。! 2003年1月底，Sahara Dust开始录制他们的首张专集。这次乐队选择在德国录制这张专集，制作人是Sascha Paeth（制作过Rhapsody的许多专集），Luca Turili 和 Kamelot，虽然主唱Simone病了使得乐队有一小段时间停滞，不过这张专集仍是非常棒的，专集中的各首歌不能光用让人满意来概括，简直是太优秀了，而他们与制作人的合作也是相当愉快。用Mark的话来说就是：“我们经常意见统一。他确实将歌曲提高到一个更高的水平。- E k+ n: Z; `: j
2003年3月乐队决定改名为Epica（Kamelot最近的一张专集名）。根据官方的说法，乐队成员想通过改新名字，出新专集得到一个新的开始，一次重生。
5 R: x* }' o3 X F6月初Epica的首张专集"The Phantom Agony"正式登上商店货架。这张专集已经被许多金属杂志收录介绍了。Epica音乐中的一个重要组成部分是唱诗班的伴唱。与Mark的前乐队After Forever相比，Epica的唱诗班大概有以前的两倍大，在许多歌中这个6人的唱诗班扮演着最重要的角色。大部分的Epica成员还是电影音乐迷，特别是Hans Zimmer 和 Danny Elfman。这些影响在"The Phantom Agony"中都有体现，特别是专集的同名曲，更是优秀的电影音乐作品。/ c( o. x+ S6 C* R) ?' N
乐队的另一特点是运用管弦乐队。乐队与一个真正的8人管弦乐队合作，当然，女歌手在乐队中也是一个非常重要的角色：女中音Simone Simons，是一个年轻有才华的歌手，她对学习新东西有着巨大的热情，在每场演出中你都能看到她的进步和成熟。Epica的一些作品还具有阿拉伯风味，这在Mark还在After Forever时就众所周知了。歌曲"Seif Al Din"便是其中的最佳代表作。2 g( _$ t8 K' e- Z* q
"The Phantom Agony"中的歌词（第二首是Simone的作品，第七首是Mark的作品）都是Mark最喜欢的话题，关于宗教和政治的（"Facade of Reality"《现实的正面》就是诉说2001年的9。11事件的，其中我们还能听到英国首相Tony Blair的几段讲话）。专集中也有几首关于个人感情的歌：Mark写的"Run For A Fall"，是关于他离开After Forever的事；还有就是Simone写的"Illusive Consensus"是关于爱情的。1 ~/ X4 z2 S7 M, J1 U. t
Epica正忙着宣传他们的专集：接受采访，当然也有现场演唱会什么的。乐队签署了著名的预约代理商MOJOconcerts。也就是说乐队不久就会有更多的特约演出。离开After Forever之后的 Mark Jansen变的更加成熟了，同时，还要感谢所有帮助他作音乐的音乐家们在歌曲上的贡献。

乐队特色
) u! I6 i6 e4 ~. ~7 ~( T. O; T$ c他们有一个合唱团 ( 有两个男高音和4个女高音） 和一列管弦乐队（3个小提琴、两个中提琴、两个大提琴和一个直立式贝斯）.- O. H/ h. y% l$ s+ a
Epica 乐队混合了哥特金属和交响金属 其他成分还有力量金属。 吉他手Ad Sluijter形容到乐队就像：“ 一座桥把哥特金属和力量连接起来” 主唱Simone Simons 表示：偏爱把它描述为 交响金属 。 而Mark Jansen 倒不是这么认为 他不介意别人把它称为 哥特金属 。

A: n他们运用了许多交响金属和哥德金属乐队会使用的方式：一方面运用死腔，另一方面又用空灵优美的女声作为强烈对比。Eduardo Rivadavia 在 All Music Guide 网站上说：“Epica的吸引力来自于光与暗两种极端声音的对比；巨大的吉他 riff 与快速的鼓点造成的沉重压力，和层层管弦乐和键盘所堆栈的悦耳音乐互相对比。”Simone Simons 则用在次女高音音域的歌剧式唱腔演唱歌曲，但有时她也会演唱“毫无瑕疵、带有丰富情感的纯净女低音。”Mark Jansen 的死腔“虽然是用来衬托 Simons 的歌声，但是在于音乐平衡度和多样化上非常重要。”乐队也会聘请合唱团和交响乐队去增加音乐上的装饰，像是吟诵字句和演唱拉丁文或阿拉伯文的歌词。
