/ S9 ]. _+ v( R8 P, T2002年8月2日，Mark Jansen被迫离开成功的荷兰金属乐队After Forever，这给他们的乐迷极大的震惊，并引起了许多讨论和愤慨。但是Mark Jansen自己却想尽快再次投入到工作之中。两个星期之后，他终于找到了他自己的乐队Sahara Dust。
4 u7 _, t% T" D2 f6 _3 v经过两次的人员重组后，乐队于2002年11月正式成立。首先加入新乐队的成员是：吉他手Ad Sluijter，Mark的朋友和Cassiopeia的前任吉他手，也曾经和Coen Janssen协助After Forever完成过两场演出，过去他也曾和After Forever有些关系的（在他们第一任键盘手离开之后他曾参加他们在Effenaar, Eindhoven的特约演出）。很快贝司手Yves Huts也加入他们了。( l% T: T; X/ Y# V; U. l& q* K

2003年1月底，Sahara Dust开始录制他们的首张专集。这次乐队选择在德国录制这张专集，制作人是Sascha Paeth（制作过Rhapsody的许多专集），Luca Turili 和 Kamelot，虽然主唱Simone病了使得乐队有一小段时间停滞，不过这张专集仍是非常棒的，专集中的各首歌不能光用让人满意来概括，简直是太优秀了，而他们与制作人的合作也是相当愉快。用Mark的话来说就是：“我们经常意见统一。他确实将歌曲提高到一个更高的水平。0 `0 f6 c8 W/ n p$ r
2003年3月乐队决定改名为Epica（Kamelot最近的一张专集名）。根据官方的说法，乐队成员想通过改新名字，出新专集得到一个新的开始，一次重生。 I( D; f* j# ~$ Q4 d: `
6月初Epica的首张专集"The Phantom Agony"正式登上商店货架。这张专集已经被许多金属杂志收录介绍了。Epica音乐中的一个重要组成部分是唱诗班的伴唱。与Mark的前乐队After Forever相比，Epica的唱诗班大概有以前的两倍大，在许多歌中这个6人的唱诗班扮演着最重要的角色。大部分的Epica成员还是电影音乐迷，特别是Hans Zimmer 和 Danny Elfman。这些影响在"The Phantom Agony"中都有体现，特别是专集的同名曲，更是优秀的电影音乐作品。. l, \! y# b" ?$ b* L1 |# Q0 R$ n
乐队的另一特点是运用管弦乐队。乐队与一个真正的8人管弦乐队合作，当然，女歌手在乐队中也是一个非常重要的角色：女中音Simone Simons，是一个年轻有才华的歌手，她对学习新东西有着巨大的热情，在每场演出中你都能看到她的进步和成熟。Epica的一些作品还具有阿拉伯风味，这在Mark还在After Forever时就众所周知了。歌曲"Seif Al Din"便是其中的最佳代表作。
* T3 G' e$ L% y5 E# v"The Phantom Agony"中的歌词（第二首是Simone的作品，第七首是Mark的作品）都是Mark最喜欢的话题，关于宗教和政治的（"Facade of Reality"《现实的正面》就是诉说2001年的9。11事件的，其中我们还能听到英国首相Tony Blair的几段讲话）。专集中也有几首关于个人感情的歌：Mark写的"Run For A Fall"，是关于他离开After Forever的事；还有就是Simone写的"Illusive Consensus"是关于爱情的。/ _ s# G J3 U8 F/ S. J
