# N5 S% E9 G3 u, q2002年8月2日，Mark Jansen被迫离开成功的荷兰金属乐队After Forever，这给他们的乐迷极大的震惊，并引起了许多讨论和愤慨。但是Mark Jansen自己却想尽快再次投入到工作之中。两个星期之后，他终于找到了他自己的乐队Sahara Dust。

2003年1月底，Sahara Dust开始录制他们的首张专集。这次乐队选择在德国录制这张专集，制作人是Sascha Paeth（制作过Rhapsody的许多专集），Luca Turili 和 Kamelot，虽然主唱Simone病了使得乐队有一小段时间停滞，不过这张专集仍是非常棒的，专集中的各首歌不能光用让人满意来概括，简直是太优秀了，而他们与制作人的合作也是相当愉快。用Mark的话来说就是：“我们经常意见统一。他确实将歌曲提高到一个更高的水平。
6 K" a1 c: {2 t7 s/ O, H0 T( F d2003年3月乐队决定改名为Epica（Kamelot最近的一张专集名）。根据官方的说法，乐队成员想通过改新名字，出新专集得到一个新的开始，一次重生。
! g) w) I9 G3 j6月初Epica的首张专集"The Phantom Agony"正式登上商店货架。这张专集已经被许多金属杂志收录介绍了。Epica音乐中的一个重要组成部分是唱诗班的伴唱。与Mark的前乐队After Forever相比，Epica的唱诗班大概有以前的两倍大，在许多歌中这个6人的唱诗班扮演着最重要的角色。大部分的Epica成员还是电影音乐迷，特别是Hans Zimmer 和 Danny Elfman。这些影响在"The Phantom Agony"中都有体现，特别是专集的同名曲，更是优秀的电影音乐作品。7 T2 P, v; ]/ ~/ x( P6 h
乐队的另一特点是运用管弦乐队。乐队与一个真正的8人管弦乐队合作，当然，女歌手在乐队中也是一个非常重要的角色：女中音Simone Simons，是一个年轻有才华的歌手，她对学习新东西有着巨大的热情，在每场演出中你都能看到她的进步和成熟。Epica的一些作品还具有阿拉伯风味，这在Mark还在After Forever时就众所周知了。歌曲"Seif Al Din"便是其中的最佳代表作。
