Jimi于1942年11月27日出生于华盛顿西雅图，印第安黑人血统，他小时候就整天泡在父亲A1收藏的Jazz和 Blues唱片中，并通过收音机收听R&B，Rock Nroll等新音乐风格。A1看出儿子对音乐的强烈兴趣，给他买了一把吉它，Jimi不放过任何练习的机会，很快就能跟当地几个乐队演出了。

中专毕业后Jimi曾在军营中呆过一段短暂时间，之后他选择了做一名"吟游吉它手"，在当时一些较有名的黑人R&B乐队作替补，过了几年吉普赛人式的流浪生活后，Jimi来到纽约定居在格林威治村，那里是许多豪放不羁的艺术家的聚居之所，Jimi因而接触到不同风格的艺术，文学，尢其是音乐。
