极地双子星基本上是个三人乐队。1981由吉它手罗宾·格思里（Robin Guthrie）、威尔·希格瑞（Will Heggie）和主唱伊丽莎白·弗雷泽（Elizabeth Fraser）组成。 Robin和Wil在酒吧结识了正在跳舞的Liz Fraser，把她招收为乐队成员。 1983年，推出Peppermint Pig单曲后，Will Heggie离开了乐队，另组LOWLIFE。之后极地双子星曾一度维持2人组型态推出作品。
