说起N.E.R.D.乐团就不得不说到当今美国最著名的说唱音乐和流行音乐制作团体The Neptunes，The Neptunes的两名成员Pharrell Williams和Chad Hugo可以说是如今美国流行音乐界最炙手可热的音乐制作人，特别是当他们在2004年初的第46届格莱美颁奖典礼上风光无限的夺取多项大奖之后更是如此，而他们两个人再加上另一位说唱歌手Shay就构成了N.E.R.D.乐团，N.E.R.D.说唱乐团就是The Neptunes组合自己的乐团，N.E.R.D.名字的意思就是“No One Ever Really Dies”。
自从1997年之后，The Neptunes就先后为Babyface，Janet Jackson，Britney Spears，Toni Braxton，Mary J. Blige，Destiny's Child，Justin Timberlake，NSYNC，Limp Bizkit，Jay-Z等摇滚乐，流行音乐以及说唱和R&B音乐大牌歌星和乐队担任制作人。作为当今美国最著名的流行音乐制作团体，早在2001年的时候，The Neptunes就曾经以N.E.R.D.乐团的名义首先在英国发行了他们有史以来的第一张专辑《In Search Of...》，这张融合了摇滚乐与说唱音乐的专辑在欧洲遭到了几乎所有乐评人一致的批评，成为了评论界垃圾唱片的代表，实际上在市场商业销售方面也没有什么好的表现。随后N.E.R.D.吸取教训，立即对音乐重新进行了制作，混音，并在2002年初在美国重新发行，但是这张唱片同样在美国遭遇了失败，专辑首周仅仅排名Billboard 200排行榜的第56位，并且最终销量也不过仅仅超过了50万张多一点，这与The Neptunes的名声是极其不相符的，或许正是因为如此，所以The Neptunes才在随后长达一年的时间里专心为其他艺人录制专辑而并没有过多考虑自己的作品。
2003年8月19日，Pharrell Williams和Chad Hugo干脆以The Neptunes发行了“The Neptunes”的第一张专辑《The Neptunes Present... Clones》，在这张众星云集的专辑中，Jay-Z，Nelly等人都有独唱单曲，不过这张专辑总算还是取得了相当的成功，不仅发行首周就成为了排行榜的冠军，同时专辑销量也突破白金。最终The Neptunes在2003年的努力在第46届格莱美颁奖礼上得到了认可，他们获得了年度最佳非古典类制作人(Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical)大奖。
在取得了重大的成功之后，The Neptunes终于又重新开始策划自己的音乐专辑，他们更多的使用了乐器表现，他们再次以N.E.R.D.乐团的名义三个人共同录制了《Fly or Die》，并且这次首先一旦曲开道，确保专辑在发行之后不会遭冷遇，2004年3月23日，《Fly or Die》正式发行。
