早年经历
出生于英属哥伦比亚维多利亚的一个葡萄牙移民家庭，双亲各为Maria Manuela与António José Furtado。她的名字是来自于苏联的体操选手Nellie Kim。 妮莉在四岁时在教堂的葡萄牙日上首次与妈妈共同献唱。Although remaining unclear about her religious beliefs, she still affirms a belief in God, the Ten Commandments, and in avoiding the Seven Sins. 9岁起逐渐开始接触伸缩喇叭、四弦琴，几年后也开始学习吉他与钢琴。12岁起，她开始写歌，且开始在葡萄牙游行乐队中演奏。
Furtado has acknowledged her family as the source of her strong work ethic; she spent eight summers working as a chambermaid with her mother, who was a housekeeper in Victoria. She has stated that coming from a working class background has shaped her identity in a positive way.
