外号「瘦皮猴」的法兰克·辛纳区出生于1915年12月12日，1939年起先后加入Harry James、Tommy Dorsey乐团担任主唱，1942年以个人名义单飞开始了超过半世纪之久的演艺生涯。辛纳区先后与多组大乐队合作，创造了成串的畅销单曲、专辑，得奖记录亦不胜枚举，葛莱美流行男歌手或传统流行演唱奖多非他莫属，1959、1965、66三次拿下年度专辑，1966年的"Strangers In The Night"同时是年度最佳单曲；五十岁那年已经获得了葛莱美终生成就奖的殊荣。
Sinatra出身贫寒，他的父母亲都是来自意大利的移民，因此他根本没有机会获得良好的教育。在他十六岁的时候，就中途辍学，选择演唱作为自己谋生的手段，当时由于他藉藉无名，很难获得唱片公司的合同，因此哪里能够挣到钱，哪里有观众，他就在哪里演唱。在此时，他的演唱只是他谋生的手段而已。然而他天生一份歌唱家的嗓子，在加入"霍布肯四人演唱小组"之后，终于得到了人们的注意。在1935年一次由广播电台举办的业余歌手大赛中，他们的乐队夺得了大奖，当时的奖项名字叫做"梅杰·鲍维斯业余天才小时"。他的小组在获胜之后，取得了同鲍维斯合作参加巡回演出的机会。后来他参加一部电影的拍摄，当时他试演的角色是一位脸涂黑了的男士，这种角色产生的影响力很难说是好还是坏。从1937年到1939年，这支乐队一直在新泽西州的一家叫做"生锈的船舱"的街头餐馆中演唱。从1939年起，他开始在WNEW电台的"舞曲天堂"节目中演唱，以此谋生。

在1951年他的婚变成为了报纸争相报道的话题，他离开了自己的妻子南希，同著名影星爱娃·加德纳结婚这在当时被认为是不义之举，南希成为了人们同情的对象，西纳特技和加德纳则成为了受谴责的目标。与此同时，在五十年代初盛行于美国文艺界的麦卡锡主义也把矛头指向了西纳持拉。
在1946年，他赢得了一项奥斯卡金像奖的特别奖并作为赞成宗教和种族宽容的代言人的努力建立起他作为自由主义者以及具有进步思想的个人主义者的声望。也许在这与实际相差甚远，但在公众的眼中，Sinatra确实是值得广泛尊重的。他的这种声望一直延续到六十年代，直到他支持的党派换成了共和党。
1954年，Sinatra再次赢得了奥斯卡金像奖，他成功地出演了影片《从此到永远》，这帮助他走出了五十年代中期开始的低谷期。
六十年代，西纳持拉重新确认了他在爵士乐坛的地位，他先后录制了有唐·科斯塔和尼尔·海夫蒂编曲的专辑。另外，还和Count Basie合作。
